Outreach to Those in Need
Aid for Friends
Aid for Friends is a ministry that feeds the needy, shut-ins, and the frail elderly in the greater Philadelphia area. Once a month members of Holy Comforter gather to cook meals for the program. Parishioners also transport the meals downtown to the Aid for Friends headquarters.
We believe in this ministry because Jesus said that whenever we feed someone, we are feeding Him (Matthew 25:31-46). We’re always looking for new volunteers. Come join us!
For the last seven years at Holy Comforter, we have sought to reclaim the seasons of Advent and Christmas from the culture of consumerism and materialism that has hijacked them. Joining with other churches around the country, we resolve to buy fewer gifts, to give more relational gifts, and to use some of what we save to build wells in parts of the world where people lack access to clean water.
Five years ago, we collected a portion of what we saved and gave it to build a clean water well in a small village in Peru. Thanks to our efforts, the 35 people who live in Union Central are alive and well today. We have funded the building of two other wells since. A fourth well was restored in Rogbere Village, Sierra Leone in 2015 (and you can read the full report here: Living Water International Report to Church of the Holy Comforter 2015). We plan to continue to bring clean water to those in need, partnering with our friends at Living Water International. Lack of access to clean drinking water is one of the biggest risks to the health of people in developing nations, but through our generosity and God’s blessing, we can eradicate this problem in Peru, Sierra Leone, and around the world.
Located in nearby Darby, the Mothers’ Home is a beacon of hope for homeless pregnant women. It is one of only two such homes in the state of Pennsylvania. The Mothers’ Home is an opportunity for empowerment as the expectant mothers receive counseling, childbirth and parenting classes, job preparation programs, assistance in finding independent housing, and much more. Each year, approximately 40 new mothers come to live at Mothers’ Home.
For many years, Holy Comforter has supported Mothers’ Home through financial gifts. In more recent years, we have become more involved, teaching classes, organizing drives for toiletries and SEPTA tokens, and celebrating community events like our annual Thanksgiving dinner.
Domestic Abuse Project of Delaware County
Since 1976, DAP has been advocating for victims of domestic abuse. In addition to advocacy and education, DAP also provides shelter and support services. Holy Comforter has been involved for the last year, hosting community information sessions, collecting items for children, and helping to spread the word. We look forward to our continuing participation in this effort as we seek together to create a more loving and peaceful community.
