Check out the video below that shows how the Episcopal Bishop of Haiti and his priests are responding to the earthquake. There is some genuinely saintly work being done by brave Christians in the midst of this tragedy.
For our part, Holy Comforter is seeking to respond quickly to lend aid. A small contribution was made from the Rector's Discretionary Fund on the day after the earthquake. The youth has chosen to give half the proceeds of their upcoming pancake breakfast to Hatian relief efforts. The Vestry has also authorized $1000 to go immediately to the effort and will match up to an additional $1000 in parishioner contributions. Finally, our deanery (a sub-unit of our diocese which consists of about six churches) is looking to establish a partnership with an equivalent body in the Diocese of Haiti in the hopes of investing in long term relief for the island.
These are dark times for the people of an already devestated nation. Our Lord weeps for his people amidst the ruins. God is with the people in those camps as they suffer. May we not forget them in our prayers or in our actions.
