Church of the Holy Comforter

Becoming a Christian

At Holy Comforter, we seek to follow Jesus whom we know to be both God and man. We believe that he died to save us from sin and that he rose from the grave to give us eternal life. And we believe that God wants each of us to come into relationship with him through faith in Jesus.

We believe that God is already reaching out to you, but for most people conversion doesn’t happen all at once. It’s a process. And out of love and obedience to Our Lord, we want to walk with you, to nurture you in your spiritual journey, wherever you are along that path.

Frequently Asked Questions

I’m not sure if I believe in any of this stuff, but I want to come to church and see what it’s all about. Is that ok?

Absolutely. We would love to have you join us for one of our weekly worship services. The best way to get to know us is to spend time with us in worship. You don’t need to be an Episcopalian or even a Christian to attend a service. You are always welcome.

How do I know if I’m a Christian or not?

Being a Christian isn’t like being a part of a club or another membership organization. It means that you recognize the presence of God in your life, that you make a commitment to follow Jesus as Lord, and that you become one with Him and with His Church through the sacraments.

You don’t have to be perfect to be a Christian. We’re not perfect. We mess up a lot. And we spend a great deal of time running away from God or looking for other things to take the place of God in our lives. But we believe that God loves us and that God wants us to turn back to him when we stray. Christians call that "repentence" which means turning back towards God. Our lives as followers of Jesus must be grounded in repentence. When we repent, God forgives us and gives us the grace we need to grow in our knowledge and love of the truth.

If you’re not sure about Christianity, the best thing to do is to seek God out in prayer and ask him to show you the truth. If you’re not sure how to do this, we hold regular classes and workshops at Holy Comforter that may be helpful. You can also schedule some time to meet with our priest who will be happy to listen to you and to answer your questions.

I think I might want to become a Christian. What’s the next step?

Each fall we offer a four week class called Mere Christianity in which the basics of the Christian faith are taught, with plenty of opportunities for questions and conversation. If you think you might like to become a Christian, or if you’ve been away from the Church for a long time, this is a good place for you to start. Call the church office for more information.

If after taking this class you decide that God is calling you to become a Christian, then the next step would be to get baptized.

I’m already a Christian but not an Anglican / Episcopalian. How do I become a member of Holy Comforter?

If you’re already a baptized Christian then we believe that you are already a member of the One, Holy, Catholic, and Apostolic Church that was founded by Our Lord Jesus. But to become a member of our parish, you also need to be confirmed or “received” into the Episcopal Church. Adults who seek confirmation or reception into the Church are encouraged to take Anglicanism 101, a four week class that runs each fall. Call the church office for more information.

I’m an Episcopalian and I’d like to transfer in from another parish. H
ow do I do that?

Simply call your old parish and ask them to send your records to us. We’ll be happy to have you.
